Monthly FX insights for June

Week 1: 02/06/25 - 06/06/25

Week one of the month means US jobs numbers, and markets will be watching closely for signs of cracks in the labour market due to tariffs and trade policy uncertainty. Expectations are for the data to show signs of a cooling job market.

Before that, we have ISM manufacturing figures on Monday and service sector numbers on Thursday, both of which are also expected to be soft given the ongoing trade policy uncertainty.

Closer to home, the European Central Bank (ECB) is likely to cut rates by 25 basis points on Thursday. Before that, on Tuesday, EU CPI figures are expected to show easing inflationary pressures across the eurozone.

Week 2: 09/06/25 - 13/06/25

UK job numbers kick off the week. Bank of England (BoE) Governor Bailey recently commented that he feels the labour market has loosened, with the pace of slowing pay growth remaining intact. We could see some pressure on the pound if this week’s data confirms that view and adds to expectations of a rate cut.

In the US, inflation figures are due on Wednesday. Markets will be watching closely to assess the impact of tariffs on the economy and what that could mean for the Federal Reserve's (Fed's) rate policy.

Week 3: 16/06/25 - 20/06/25

A big rate decision week, with four central banks in focus. The Fed, BoE, and Bank of Japan (BoJ) are all expected to hold interest rates, while the Swiss National Bank (SNB) is expected to cut rates by 25 basis points. There’s also a 32% chance of a 50bp cut, which would take rates to -0.25% in Switzerland.

UK CPI figures are also due this week. Last month’s reading surprised to the upside, leaving the UK with the highest core inflation rate among major economies.

Week 4: 23/06/25 - 27/06/25

We finish the month with Flash PMIs from the UK, EU, and US, as markets continue to gauge the economic impact of Trump’s tariffs. Core PCE inflation readings will also be released this week.
